As you read in Genesis about creation, I want to make a connection between the physical and the spiritual. While we physically water plants so they will grow, we also need to nurture seeds planted in our heart.

Genesis2:5 (AMPC) says, “When no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not [yet] caused it to rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the ground.”

While the Lord spoke vegetation and fruit into existence and called it good, more is needed. The Lord needs rain for the seed and man to till the ground before it will manifest to its fullest degree. So the Lord had a mist from within the ground come up and water the ground as the morning dew.

Recognizing the Seeds God Planted in Your Heart

Think of the promises God has spoken directly to you through His Word as well as the prophetic words spoken over you in the past and in more recent times.  Take some time and write them down. Pray over them. War a good warfare by the words spoken over you.

Often times I find myself wondering when or if they will come to pass.  These words are spoken to me and planted within my heart but haven’t fully grown yet.  The seed is there.  The potential is there. The power is there.  But there are two things needed according to Genesis 2:5 for that word spoken to my heart to flourish.

What is Needed to Nurture Seeds Planted in Your Heart

  • Water
  • Fertile Ground

Every seed needs watering.  There is a time where we are to water the seed within ourself. While water may come from other sources, we hold a responsibility as well.  We water the seed with the water of the Word.  The water comes from the River of Life that is within me.  The River of Life flows in me and through me bringing life to everything it touches.

The seed needs fertile ground to take root and grow.  There is a process in preparing the ground for seeds to take.  Jeremiah tells us to “Break up your ground left uncultivated for a season, so that you may not sow among thorns” (Jeremiah 4:3, AMPC).  He is speaking of the hard parts of our heart we have allowed to get cold and stay hidden. We have a choice to make. Will we allow the Lord to break through those areas and bring healing creating fertile ground?

What Will Grow

The Holy Spirit asked me “Will you water and work the ground of your heart? Will you allow the words spoken to you and over you to flourish and produce fruit in your life?”    I  was taken back for a moment as I was unsure how to respond.

There are several words spoken over us that I assumed would happen within a variety of ways. Now looking at the next 2 years and the words spoken over us, I am unsure what the Lord is doing. Personally, I don’t like uncertainty or surprises. I thought I had an idea of what these words would look like. Now I am unsure.

As I sit in silence with the question the Lord asked me, I know what I need to do. I need to allow the Word to nurture seeds planted within me and not have a predetermined outcome. Then I responded to the Lord, “Show me my heart. Reveal the hardened parts I need to break up and water. I want you to enter and heal what only you can heal. I trust you.”

So I leave you with the same question this morning. “Are you willing to nurture God’s Word in your heart? Will you water and till up the ground of your heart for the words spoken to you and over you to flourish and produce fruit in your life?”
