Ministry, much like life, is a series of changing seasons. Just as the earth rotates through spring, summer, fall, and winter, we too experience shifts in our spiritual walk and ministries. Some of those seasons are full of color and growth; others feel barren, dry, and painfully still.
I’ve learned something important in every change of season. What matters most is that I stay operating in grace and not in my flesh. Because storms will come. Pressures will press in. And when they do, my strength alone isn’t enough to carry me. But if I’m rooted—deep in Christ—I won’t break. Instead, I’ll endure, and even grow.
Spring: When Everything Blooms
There are moments in ministry when everything seems to come alive. The ideas are fresh, the opportunities are abundant, and the fruit of your work shows up in ways greater than you could have imagined. It feels like spring—growth everywhere, beauty surrounding you, a sense of renewal and excitement.
Summer: The Heat of Pressure
But then comes summer. With the sunshine comes the heat. Ministry demands increase, expectations rise, and sometimes it feels like the intensity is too much. Droughts can creep in, leaving you thirsty for refreshment. Summer can be a season of testing, reminding us to dig deeper into the well of God’s presence.
Fall: The Shifting and Letting Go
Next, there are times of change. Ministry doesn’t look the same anymore. Routines shift, responsibilities change, and it feels like autumn—things you once held tightly to are shedding away like leaves. This season can be bittersweet. Beautiful, yes, but it carries the quiet ache of letting go.
Winter: The Waiting and the Stillness
And then, there is winter. A season I find myself heading toward or possibly in right now. It feels cold, dry, and pressured. Fruit isn’t visible. Growth feels stalled although it is happening under the surface. And the temptation is real—to get stuck, to believe this season will never end, to lose hope.
But winter is not a wasted season. It’s preparation. Roots grow deeper when the surface is quiet. What feels barren is often a hidden work of God, setting the stage for spring to come again.
The Promise of Spring Again
The danger is not that we go through winter—the danger is staying stuck there. Because God’s design is never for us to remain frozen. He calls us forward into spring, into new beginnings, even if that means stepping into unfamiliar territory.
That’s where I am today—acknowledging the winter but pressing forward to a change in seasons, refusing to settle in the cold. I want to walk into the new season He has prepared, even if I can’t see it yet.
