Staying Rooted When Life Feels Shaky

There are seasons in life when it feels like everything around you is shifting. One phone call changes your plans. Your boss pulls you into his office. A health scare shakes your faith. Financial struggles cause you to question your stability. Or maybe, like me, you’ve had a string of situations that made you feel like the ground beneath you wasn’t as steady as you thought.

When the storms hit, my first instinct used to be panic. I’d overthink every detail, replay conversations in my head, and exhaust myself trying to figure out the “right” next step. But here’s what I’ve learned: panic makes you sway, but God calls you to stay rooted.

Roots Keep You Standing

In Colossians 2:6-7, Paul writes, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith…” Roots are what hold a tree steady when the wind picks up. They don’t keep the storm from coming, but they keep the tree from toppling over during the storm.

Our spiritual roots work the same way. The deeper we’re planted in God’s Word, prayer, and community, the less the shaking can uproot us. Life may bend us, but it won’t break us.

Being Rooted Takes Daily Choice

One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is that staying rooted isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a daily commitment. It’s easy to stay grounded when life feels calm. But when my calendar is full, my phone is buzzing with notifications, and my mind is spinning with worries and expectations, I have to choose—again—to put my focus back on Christ.

Many times that looks like waking up early to read my Bible before my mind gets distracted. Other days, it’s whispering a prayer in the middle of the grocery store or at my desk when I feel anxiety creeping in. And yes, there are days when staying rooted is as simple as reminding myself to breathe and remember who is actually in control.

Shaky Seasons Reveal Our Roots

I’ll be honest—there have been times I thought I was deeply rooted, but one hard situation revealed that my roots were shallow. Maybe you’ve been there too. It’s humbling to realize that we’ve been drawing strength from our routines, our resources, or even our own ability to handle things—instead of from God.

But here’s the grace: God doesn’t shame us when we discover weak spots in our roots. He invites us to go deeper. The shaking becomes the invitation to anchor ourselves more firmly in Him.

Three Ways to Stay Rooted When Life Shakes You

  1. Stay in Scripture, even in small doses.
  2. Stay in prayer, even when you don’t have the words.
  3. Stay connected to community. Reach out to others.

Psalm 1 paints such a beautiful picture of what it looks like to be rooted in God: “They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”

Being rooted doesn’t mean you won’t feel the wind. It means you won’t be destroyed by it. It means you’ll still bear fruit, even in hard seasons. And it means you’ll have a source of living water that doesn’t run dry when circumstances change.

If You’re Feeling Shaky Today…

Maybe you’re walking through something right now that’s making you feel unsteady—anxiety, uncertainty, grief, or transition. I want you to know that it’s okay to feel the wind. The goal isn’t to pretend it’s not there. The goal is to sink your roots deeper into the One who never moves.

And if you need a place to start, I created a Devotional for the Overwhelmed & Anxious: 21-Day Devotional for the Weary Soul to help you take that daily step toward being rooted in God’s peace.
