The alarm set twenty minutes earlier, coffee made, Bible opened, a quick prayer whispered a before beginning yet as you start reading, the words blur together. Your mind drifts to your to-do list — laundry, bills, work, dinner. A few minutes later, guilt creeps in. You close your Bible feeling frustrated, thinking, “Why can’t I stay focused? Is anything wrong with me?” Where is this distance coming from God?

You’re not lazy nor spiritually weak. Surely, you are definitely not alone.

That disconnect you’re feeling isn’t a sign of failure — it’s a sign of misunderstanding. A misunderstanding down deep within that needs to be uncovered. You’ve been trying to meet with God under false assumptions about what He actually wants.

Let’s dismantle the things that distance us from God one by one.


1. You’ve Been Taught Wrong About What Quiet Time Actually Is

For years, we’ve been told that quiet time is the hallmark of a “good Christian.” Read three chapters. Journal. Pray. After all the right things are done, you will feel closer to God. Miss a day? Cue the guilt.

If your quiet time feels mechanical or draining, it may be because you’ve been following a pattern meant to measure performance and not to nurture relationship. Think about it. If a friend only talked to you because they “had to,” you’d feel the distance. God doesn’t need your polished prayers or perfect consistency — He wants your honesty.

Quiet time isn’t about what you accomplish. It’s about what you allow God to accomplish in you through the quiet time.


2. The Character of God You’re Approaching Doesn’t Match the Real One

If you dread opening your Bible, ask yourself this question. “Who do I believe is waiting for me on the other side of these pages?”

A disappointed teacher marking your failures? Distant boss tracking your attendance?
An angry judge ready to critique your efforts? This false image of who God is has quietly hijacked your devotion and causes you to feel distant from God.

The real God — the one revealed in Scripture — is far different. He’s the One who walked into the garden calling for Adam and Eve even after they ran. The One who washed the feet of the very man who would betray Him. A God who looked at the thief on the cross and said, “Today, you’ll be with Me in paradise.” That is the God who meets you in your quiet time.

When your image of God shifts from critical to compassionate, everything changes. Quiet time stops feeling like a performance review and starts feeling more like coming home.


3. You’re Trying to Connect With Your Head Instead of Your Heart

You sit down with our Bible, but something inside whispers, “You’re not worthy.” You start to pray, but another voice says, “He’s disappointed in you.” As a result, your quiet time feels like pushing through mud.

But friend, the Cross already shattered those walls. You don’t have to strive to earn His attention — you already have it. Resting in that truth is what transforms your quiet time from effort into encounter.

Here is a hindrance nobody talks about: quiet time isn’t about what you bring to God. It’s about what you’re willing to receive from Him. Stop measuring your quiet time by how long it lasts or how much you read.
Instead, ask: Did I connect with God today? What did he say?

c. Create a Sacred Space

Light a candle. Play worship music. Make a cup of tea.
Invite peace into your environment and yield your spirit to Him.
